Description of Collaborative Activity: |
This activity addressed a time-critical public health crisis to understand Zika virus (ZIKV) and HIV in the Americas. This supplement leverages unique existing collaborations and resources from the parent award to develop models for ZIKV pathogenesis that currently do not exist. The investigators have the ideal expertise in virology, immunology, primate models of pregnancy, and pediatrics to quickly establish a relevant animal model for ZIKV infection of pregnant women. This supplement will perform initial studies of virus replication and pathogenesis in pregnant female macaques and their offspring. This will directly address a rapidly expanding public health emergency in the Americas that may threaten vulnerable HIV+ populations. |
