The National Institutes of Health's, Office of Dietary Supplement collaborates with the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory on the development of several special interest food composition databases, such as the USDA, FDA and ODS-NIH Database for the Iodine Content of Common Foods, the USDA Special Interest Databases on Flavonoids and more recently funding for the development of a database on nitrates/nitrites, thiocyanates, glucosinolates, and purines (including Methylxanthines). These databases allow researchers to estimate these components in their diet studies and provide information for clinicians/dietitians when providing dietary guidance. |
