Title of Collaborative Activity:

All-Ireland NCI Cancer Consortium (AICC)

Description of Collaborative Activity:

The goal of the All-Ireland National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Consortium is to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer on the island of Ireland, which has among the highest rates of cancer in Europe. The Consortium is regarded as a major step toward enhancing diplomatic relations between the United States, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, bringing the governments of the United States and both parts of the island together in the fight against cancer. In order to carry out its mandate of increasing scientific and public health collaborations between Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the United States, the All-Ireland NCI Cancer Consortium has six working groups to provide scientific direction to the Consortium's many programs and activities. These include prevention, nursing, epidemiology/cancer registries, clinical trials, scholar exchange, and information technology. Initiatives in the area of health economics and cancer policy analysis, biobanking, and palliative care have also been established. The Consortium has trained over 350 scientists, physicians, and other health care professionals since 2000 through its various training programs in prevention, nursing, basic and behavioral sciences. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human services renewed its MOU with ROI, and NI for five more years.
