Title of Collaborative Activity:

Alaska Suicide Prevention

Description of Collaborative Activity:

On September 23, 2014, NIMH, in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), hosted a webinar on effective practices in suicide prevention for Alaska Native communities. Suicide is a national concern, with approximately 38,000 deaths by suicide occurring in the U.S. each year. Alaska Native and American Indian populations bear a disproportionately high burden from suicide. At the webinar, mental health researchers, representatives from the Tanana chiefs Conference, and academic administrators provided an overview of suicide in Alaska and strategies to promote mental wellness and reduce suicide risk among Alaska Natives.
