Title of Collaborative Activity:

Digital Quantitation of Plasma Cells in Marrow Biopsies

Description of Collaborative Activity:

Collaboration with M. Choi., W.C. Cheng., and A. Badano., from the Imaging Physics Lab, Division of Imaging and Applied Mathematics Office of Science and Engineering Labs, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The project consists of developing software and establish validations for the automated determination of marrow cellularity and enumeration of plasma cells identified by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using a CD138 antibody. This initial effort should serve as proof of principle for a broader plan to utilize IHC-based automated quantitation of different types of cells in bone marrow core biopsies for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy monitoring of marrow disorders. Last winter (Jan-March 2014) we had the fortune to have an engineering student with us who had previous experience developing image analysis software and volunteered to help us moving our project forward. His final product is a working prototype that produces excellent results counting plasma cells in the bone marrow, and we are currently writing a paper for publication presenting the data.
