Title of Collaborative Activity:

Cross Agency Priority Goals-Service Members and Veterans Mental Health

Description of Collaborative Activity:

In 2014, the White House and the Office of Management and Budget created a Cross Agency Priority Goal to improve mental health outcomes for Service Members, Veterans, and their families. The Domestic Policy Council, National Security Council, and Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA), Defense (DoD), and Health and Human Services (HHS) led and synchronized activities across agencies to improve access to care and support research. NIH, VA, and DoD are supporting research that will standardize and integrate measurements for traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide prevention research funded by the agencies. Building on the foundation of common data elements for PTSD and suicide prevention research, efforts are underway to accelerate progress through data sharing, data harmonization, and the reporting of research results. The workgroup is tasked to develop and test suicide risk assessments and suicide prevention and treatment interventions for Service Members and Veterans. The agencies meet weekly and report quarterly on progress. .
