The Health-professional Education Partnership Initiative (HEPI) builds human capacity for health in Africa by strengthening the medical and nursing education system in an environment that values and nurtures research in President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)-funded countries. HEPI aims to advance PEPFAR's goal of increasing the number of new health care workers by 140,000; strengthen in-country medical and nursing education systems; and build clinical and research capacity in Africa as part of a retention strategy for faculty of medical and nursing schools and clinical professors. The nine HEPI awards are complemented by one award for an African Association for Health Professions Education and Research, which acts as a convening and networking entity across all medical and nursing schools in Africa. The new initiatives work in collaboration with State Department's Global AIDS Coordinator. |
