Title of Collaborative Activity:

Helicobacter pylori Genome Project (HpGP)

Description of Collaborative Activity:

Investigators in the Infections and Immunoepidemiology Branch and the Metabolic Epidemiology Branch of DCEG are undertaking a joint effort to catalog comprehensively bacterial genetic and epigenetic variation potentially related to long-term outcomes of infection. Isolates from patients with gastric cancer or advanced premalignant lesions are compared to controls with benign infection (superficial gastritis) from the same geographic area. The study goal is to sequence 1000 strains representing both high and low gastric cancer risk populations worldwide, with over 750 isolates from 50 different countries completed to date. An international team of experts is collaborating on analyses of these complex data to identify associations with the gastric carcinogenesis cascade.
