Title of Collaborative Activity:

Strong Heart Study

Description of Collaborative Activity:

Originally, the Strong Heart Study (SHS) the study attempted to look at differences in CVD and CVD risk factors among three geographically diverse groups of American Indians comprising 4,549 men and women ages 45-74. Three exams were completed on the original cohort, which continues to be followed for morbidity and mortality. Following a successful pilot study, the focus of the last two examinations has been on evaluating genetic and environmental contributors to CVD in a cohort of extended families. Two exams have been completed to date on this cohort of 3,768 individuals from about 120 families. The SHS collaborates with the Indian Health Service on access to health records, development of research goals, and communication with the Tribal Communities.
