Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus (UMLS)

Description of Collaborative Activity:

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) integrates and distributes key terminology, classification and coding standards, and associated resources to promote creation of more effective and interoperable biomedical information systems and services, including electronic health records. NLM ingests over 200 different medical vocabulary sources, mapping these vocabularies into a unified terminology set, and providing access to the native versions of these terminologies to enable interoperability between researchers, health professionals and health data systems. Collaborators such as NCI, AHRQ, CDC, CMS, and FDA have provided vocabularies for inclusion in the UMLS and have provided input for UMLS development and enhancements.
