This program aims to establish reliability in measurements of C-peptide, which is a byproduct of insulin production by beta cells and thus useful as a marker of beta cell function. In people taking insulin as therapy for diabetes, C-peptide is used to assess insulin production from the beta cell. In clinical trials of agents designed to prevent the disease in at-risk persons, or to preserve beta cell function in individuals with new onset type 1 diabetes, C-peptide is being used as the key outcome measure. |
